鄭和(1371－1433)是中國也是世界歷史上的偉大航海家，是世界航海史上地理大發(fā)現(xiàn)的先驅(qū)。從明永樂三年到宣德八年(1405－1433)的28年間，鄭和奉使七下西洋(鄭和航海時(shí)代的東西洋分界以帽山為準(zhǔn)，帽山以西的大海，是為西洋；帽山以東的大海，則屬東洋范圍。概言之，當(dāng)時(shí)的西洋即今印度洋)。
鄭和下西洋是明代初年的盛事，是中國走向世界的壯舉。鄭和下西洋的偉大事業(yè)，是人類文明史上第一次大規(guī)模的遠(yuǎn)航。其航海規(guī)模之大，持續(xù)時(shí)間之長，統(tǒng)率部眾之多，航海里程之遠(yuǎn)，航海技術(shù)之先進(jìn)，在當(dāng)時(shí)是舉世無雙的。
鄭和是中國人民的和平友好的使者。在28年的時(shí)間里，鄭和統(tǒng)率“舟師 ”，涉滄溟十萬余里，歷訪東南亞、南亞、西亞和東非的30多個(gè)國家和地區(qū)，送去了中國人民對受訪國深厚的友好情誼，帶回了亞非各國人民對中國的親切感情；鄭和下西洋，增進(jìn)了中外友好交往，拓展了海上絲綢(瓷)之路，擴(kuò)大了亞非國家的海上交通和貿(mào)易往來，加強(qiáng)了文化交流和物種交流，推動了世界文明的進(jìn)程，為人類和平發(fā)展事業(yè)作出了重大貢獻(xiàn)。
鄭和下西洋這一偉大的歷史性事件，依托的是明初國家的統(tǒng)一強(qiáng)盛，依托的是明初整個(gè)社會經(jīng)濟(jì)的發(fā)展、科學(xué)技術(shù)的進(jìn)步。同時(shí)，鄭和下西洋對科學(xué)技術(shù)和經(jīng)濟(jì)的發(fā)展，對生產(chǎn)力的推動，也具有十分深遠(yuǎn)的意義。
