本書(shū)在闡述英語(yǔ)詞法和句法時(shí),從傳統(tǒng)語(yǔ)法和當(dāng)代語(yǔ)法兩個(gè)角度進(jìn)行了對(duì)比。眾所周知,英語(yǔ)傳統(tǒng)語(yǔ)法已有兩千多年的歷史,定義、規(guī)則和例證通俗易懂,為英語(yǔ)教學(xué)作出了巨大貢獻(xiàn),同時(shí)也為其他語(yǔ)法流派的確立奠定了基礎(chǔ),功績(jī)顯赫。但隨著語(yǔ)言的發(fā)展和人們認(rèn)識(shí)的提高,傳統(tǒng)語(yǔ)法存在的問(wèn)題顯得越來(lái)越突出,因?yàn)樗且岳≌Z(yǔ)法體系為藍(lán)本,正誤不以大多數(shù)人的口語(yǔ)為準(zhǔn),而以書(shū)面語(yǔ)為準(zhǔn),不統(tǒng)一、不嚴(yán)謹(jǐn),有的的現(xiàn)象進(jìn)有發(fā)生。本書(shū)在論述傳統(tǒng)語(yǔ)法的優(yōu)點(diǎn)和存在的問(wèn)題的同時(shí),著重論述了英語(yǔ)理論語(yǔ)法及其在教學(xué)中的應(yīng)用。例如,轉(zhuǎn)換-生成語(yǔ)法與系統(tǒng)功能語(yǔ)法之間存在著內(nèi)在的差別。以轉(zhuǎn)換生成語(yǔ)法為代表的形式語(yǔ)言學(xué)是從個(gè)體內(nèi)部的角度來(lái)研究語(yǔ)言的,即從個(gè)體的心理和生理的角度來(lái)研究大腦的活動(dòng)機(jī)制,以此發(fā)現(xiàn)個(gè)體是如何運(yùn)用天賦的語(yǔ)言能力生成無(wú)限的合乎語(yǔ)法規(guī)則的句子的。這種語(yǔ)法所關(guān)注的首要問(wèn)題是語(yǔ)法結(jié)構(gòu)的形式及其相互關(guān)系,而不是它們?cè)诓煌Z(yǔ)境中的意義和使用問(wèn)題。系統(tǒng)功能語(yǔ)法把語(yǔ)言看作是一個(gè)交際系統(tǒng),語(yǔ)法分析的目的在于發(fā)現(xiàn)語(yǔ)法是通過(guò)怎樣的組織結(jié)構(gòu)來(lái)是語(yǔ)言使用者進(jìn)行意義的構(gòu)建和交換的。因此,這種語(yǔ)法所關(guān)注的首要問(wèn)題是語(yǔ)法結(jié)構(gòu)和結(jié)構(gòu)成分的功能及其在語(yǔ)境中的意義。
