本書是翻譯理論模式與翻譯案例互動(dòng)的研究。它以翻譯學(xué)文化派的主要代表人物Andre Lefevere的改寫理論為框架,以胡適在新文化運(yùn)動(dòng)時(shí)期的代表作和譯作為案例,把胡適對(duì)西方文學(xué)——尤其是Ezra Pound和 Henrik Ibsen的作品——的改寫、翻譯置于歷史、文化的大背景下,論證這些作品在多大程度上是對(duì)西方文學(xué)理論和作品的翻譯與改寫。從社會(huì)、政治、接受美學(xué)等角度分析接受環(huán)境的主流文化和意識(shí)形態(tài)如何操控材料的取舍、內(nèi)容的過濾、成品的接受。還涉及到轉(zhuǎn)譯、重譯、模仿等形式。
多種形式的改寫在我國現(xiàn)代史中,尤其在新文化運(yùn)動(dòng)這一重要?dú)v史轉(zhuǎn)型期對(duì)建構(gòu)新文學(xué)和新文化有著與狹義的翻譯同等重要的作用。然而,這些形式上不明顯的翻譯還沒有真正成為翻譯研究的對(duì)象。本書首次從改寫角度研究胡適對(duì)新文化運(yùn)動(dòng)的貢獻(xiàn)。強(qiáng)調(diào)他的改寫翻譯的研究價(jià)值和對(duì)文學(xué)變革的影響。富含新意。作者在利用改寫理論解釋我國翻譯現(xiàn)象的同時(shí),也對(duì)該理論進(jìn)行了批判,這對(duì)建設(shè)和豐富我國翻譯理論有著積極的意義。
