為了滿足外國語學(xué)院英語系“美國文學(xué)選讀”課小班上課的課程改革要求，滿足其他英語院校和社會(huì)英語文學(xué)愛好者對(duì)美國文學(xué)選讀教材的需求，我們編著了這部教材。之所以叫《美國文學(xué)選讀新編》，是為了體現(xiàn)它與傳統(tǒng)文學(xué)選讀教材的區(qū)別。其創(chuàng)新之處表現(xiàn)在以下幾個(gè)方面：第一，力求所選作家及作品具有代表性和經(jīng)典性，突出美國文學(xué)各個(gè)歷史階段的文化特征和文學(xué)特性。第二，一改傳統(tǒng)文學(xué)選讀教材“文學(xué)史+文學(xué)作品”的慣常模式，強(qiáng)調(diào)作品的細(xì)讀，刪除了傳統(tǒng)文學(xué)選讀教材中對(duì)史料的重復(fù)編寫。第三，凸顯學(xué)生和讀者的自主性，增強(qiáng)教材的啟發(fā)性。每單元都以引人人勝的提問介入，替代了對(duì)文學(xué)史知識(shí)乏味的回顧。鼓勵(lì)學(xué)生在閱讀文本前通過尋找問題的答案，完成對(duì)相關(guān)背景知識(shí)的認(rèn)知。這樣的編排不僅突出知識(shí)的重點(diǎn)，還鼓勵(lì)學(xué)生和讀者積極思考，自主尋求問題的答案，彰顯教材的啟發(fā)意義。每單元用一個(gè)短語或句子概述了認(rèn)識(shí)和解讀該作家的重點(diǎn)（central issue of concern），并在作品前設(shè)計(jì)一些與所選文本相關(guān)的問題（background questions and preview questions），用以回顧必要的背景知識(shí)，便于學(xué)生的自主閱讀。在所選文本后設(shè)計(jì)了討論問題（discussion questions），以加深學(xué)生對(duì)文本的理解和掌握。第四，對(duì)所選文本中涉及的文學(xué)現(xiàn)象、文學(xué)理論與批評(píng)知識(shí)、歷史文化知識(shí)等讀者難以把握和查找到的內(nèi)容，我們作了注釋，以方便讀者的閱讀。第五，為了加深讀者對(duì)所選作家及其作品的熟悉和理解，我們?cè)谒x文本后還附加了補(bǔ)充閱讀材料（assigned reading），并對(duì)其作了簡要說明。
英語文學(xué)課對(duì)提高學(xué)生的人文素養(yǎng)、豐富學(xué)生的文學(xué)知識(shí)、幫助學(xué)生了解英語國家的文化習(xí)俗、鞏固學(xué)生的英語語言基本功等，都起著至關(guān)重要的作用。
