本書(shū)為高等師范院校英語(yǔ)專(zhuān)業(yè)綜合英語(yǔ)教材第三冊(cè)，供二年級(jí)學(xué)生第一學(xué)期使用。全書(shū)共16課，外加2套復(fù)習(xí)題。現(xiàn)就本書(shū)的編寫(xiě)特點(diǎn)作如下說(shuō)明：
�。ㄒ唬┱n文（TEXT）。本冊(cè)教材中的課文以論說(shuō)文為主，選文均出自文章高手，語(yǔ)言流暢優(yōu)美，觀點(diǎn)新穎獨(dú)到，題材十分廣泛，內(nèi)容富有時(shí)代氣息，且讀起來(lái)瑯瑯上口，易于模仿。文中的論點(diǎn)并非一定全面、正確，但它們給人啟迪、令人思考，較適合經(jīng)過(guò)一年專(zhuān)門(mén)訓(xùn)練，在語(yǔ)言基本功、知識(shí)面和獨(dú)立思考能力方面都有了較大提高的二年級(jí)學(xué)生。
（二）詞匯表（WORD LIST）。本表所列的單詞屬于《大綱》規(guī)定的V級(jí)以上的詞匯范圍。學(xué)生可通過(guò)各課的詞匯練習(xí)，以及書(shū)后的總詞匯表不斷擴(kuò)大自己的詞匯量。
（三）學(xué)與練（STUDY AND PRACTICE）。這部分包括問(wèn)答題、討論題、會(huì)話、詞匯填空和句子轉(zhuǎn)換等五項(xiàng)練習(xí)。前三項(xiàng)利用課文內(nèi)容加強(qiáng)學(xué)生的口頭表達(dá)能力。其中會(huì)話部分不但含與課文內(nèi)容有一定聯(lián)系的示范對(duì)話，還配有部分特定功能意念的其他表達(dá)法及會(huì)話練習(xí)；后兩項(xiàng)旨在操練課文中出現(xiàn)的部分常用詞匯和結(jié)構(gòu)。詞匯填空練習(xí)中的動(dòng)詞應(yīng)注意其所給時(shí)態(tài)和語(yǔ)態(tài)的變化。句子轉(zhuǎn)換練習(xí)項(xiàng)中有些會(huì)有幾個(gè)可以接受的答案。
（四）語(yǔ)法（GRAMMAR）。這部分按《大綱》要求，對(duì)基本語(yǔ)法構(gòu)架作第二輪處理。所用語(yǔ)法體例和術(shù)語(yǔ)參照了R.Quirk等編著的A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language。
�。ㄎ澹┯⒄Z(yǔ)活用（USE OF ENGLISH）。這部分練習(xí)是圍繞課文內(nèi)容和語(yǔ)言現(xiàn)象設(shè)計(jì)的，然而形式更活、范圍更廣。
