本書為北京外國語學(xué)院胡文仲、揚(yáng)立民等同志所編《大學(xué)英語教程》（College English）一、二、三、四冊的續(xù)編，供大學(xué)英語本科高年級閱讀課使用。
進(jìn)入高年級階段，閱讀課應(yīng)以提高學(xué)生自學(xué)能力、利用辭典及其它工具書獨(dú)立解決語言及背景知識的難點(diǎn)、正確理解課文及作者的觀點(diǎn)為主要目的。因此，本書注釋力求精簡，一般只包括在學(xué)生現(xiàn)有的工具書中較難查到的背景知識。有的語言或背景知識難點(diǎn)是“練習(xí)”要求學(xué)生解答的，未列“注釋”。
進(jìn)入高年級后，學(xué)生不可能在課上課下做許多練習(xí)，因此，只設(shè)計(jì)了三部分：（一）側(cè)重內(nèi)容理的是非題；（二）測驗(yàn)學(xué)生對語言難點(diǎn)的理解；（三）部分討論題。
