本書為北京外國語學院胡文仲、揚立民等同志所編《大學英語教程》（College English）一、二、三、四冊的續(xù)編，供大學英語本科高年級閱讀課使用。
進入高年級階段，閱讀課應以提高學生自學能力、利用辭典及其它工具書獨立解決語言及背景知識的難點、正確理解課文及作者的觀點為主要目的。因此，本書注釋力求精簡，一般只包括在學生現(xiàn)有的工具書中較難查到的背景知識。有的語言或背景知識難點是“練習”要求學生解答的，未列“注釋”。
進入高年級后，學生不可能在課上課下做許多練習，因此，只設計了三部分：（一）側(cè)重內(nèi)容理的是非題；（二）測驗學生對語言難點的理解；（三）部分討論題。
